- Educated at Trinity College, Dublin
- Ussher was a great scholar of history and patristics
- 1606 Professor of Divinity in Dublin
- 1621 Bishop of Meath
- 1625Archbishop of Armagh
- Ussher was a staunch Calvinist, Anti-Roman and pro the established
Church.
- Invited to Wesminster Assembly but declined out of loyalty
to the Crown.
- Nevertheless Ussher's 'Irish' Articles became the basis
of the Westminster Confession and he was admired by both Presbyterians
and Independents.
- Such was his standing that on his death, during the time
of the Commonwealth, Oliver Cromwell, who otherwised
despised the Bishops, ordered that Ussher be given
a state funeral in Westminster Abbey.
