John Wesley (1703-1791)

Summary

• 1703 Born at Epworth in Lincolnshire to Samuel & Susanna Wesley
• 1720 Up to Christ Church, Oxford
• 1725 Ordained and elected a fellow of Lincoln College. Probably converted around this time.
• 1729 The “Holy Club” formed in Oxford
• 1735 Travelled to Georgia (USA) as a missionary
• 1738 Returned to England and linked up with the Moravians. Year of his "Aldersgate experience".
• 1739 Separated from the Moravians and began itinerant preaching with other “methodists”. Built first chapel in Bristol under private trusteeship. Wesley refused to separate from the established Church.
• 1784 Ordained his first ministers to provide oversight of the congregations.
• 1791 Died peacefully at the age of 88.
