Word on Wednesday: Martyn Cowan on John Owen’s Preaching

This year's St Antholin's Lecture was given by Dr Martyn Cowan, on the subject of the prophetic preaching of John Owen.

The Church Society conference this year kicked off with the 2016 St Antholin Lecture. This is an annual event, with a lecture on some kind of “puritan divinity”. Since this year is the 400th anniversary of the birth of John Owen (1616-1683), the prince of puritan preachers, the lecture this year focused on that former Vice Chancellor of Oxford University.

The lecturer was Dr Martyn Cowan, newly announced as lecturer in historical theology and church history at Union Theological College in Belfast. He did his PhD on John Owen at Peterhouse in Cambridge, so was an ideal choice to tell us about the peculiarities of Owen’s preaching.

It’s a fascinating subject with some great application for us today, and questions at the end too. So why not give it a listen while you’re doing the washing up or working on your tan this summer?

There is also a longer, written-up version of the lecture available from Latimer Trust, called Portrait of a Prophet.

Sophia Akouo is an ordinary Anglican churchgoer who enjoys listening to good talks.
