'Knowing God, Making Him Known — The Reformation & The Gospel'. Details of the next Church Society conference and AGM in May.

This year we will be remembering and celebrating 500 years since the start of the Reformation, where the gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone was recovered. We will look at how the recovery of the gospel liberated hearts and minds to know God, and how the nation was evangelised by the reforms of the church under Thomas Cranmer.

Peter Adam, former Principal of Ridley College Melbourne, will speak on Thomas Cranmer: Evangelising the Nation, looking at the distinctive features of Cranmer’s way of evangelising the nation. What features were particular to his context and what must we still use today.

Lee Gatiss, Director of Church Society, will speak on Luther on the Freedom of a Christian. If we delight in the Reformation — which was all about being justified by faith alone and liberated — why are we known more today for our traditionalism and insistence on rules? Five centuries after the start of the Reformation, what can Luther teach 21st century Christians about Christ “whose service is perfect freedom”?

On the Friday before the main conference we will be joined by Revd Dr Kirsty Birkett, for this year’s St Antholin’s Lecture. Kirsty will be looking at Reformed Epistemology. How is it that fallen minds can know anything, let alone a holy God? The Reformation brought not only reform of doctrine and Church but of how we think at all.

On the Saturday we will also be holding our AGM, where there will be details and reports of what Church Society has been up to over the last year. You can download the conference flyer and booking form here, for more details.

So do join us at Oak Hill Theological College, London on 12th and/or 13th May 2017, for this uplifting Reformation conference!

Lee Gatiss is the Director of Church Society.
